In January 2026, the Stratton community unexpectedly lost one of its most beloved and influential members. For nearly 20 years, Matt Erickson led the Club seasonal program with passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to young skiers and to Stratton Mountain.
As supervisor of the Cub Club program, Matt and his team taught generations of young skiers, instilling both a love for skiing and a love for Stratton. Beginning at just three years old, countless Cub Club “graduates” went on to accomplish remarkable things, including some who now compete on the world stage. Matt took great pride in every one of their achievements.
Beyond athletic success, Matt was especially proud of the Cub Club alumni who returned to work with the Mountain Sports School, many of whom became coaches within the very program that shaped them. As their supervisor, Matt provided steady guidance, mentorship, and support. His influence on these teenagers and young adults is immeasurable, and his advice continues to resonate with so many of us.
Matt’s mentorship extended far beyond Cub Club itself, and the entire resort is a better place because of his hard work, leadership, and heart. To honor his legacy and the deep impact he had on our community, we will celebrate his life as part of The Big Ski, an event Matt looked forward to each season.
On March 14, we invite anyone who wishes to join us at the summit at 1:00 PM. In keeping with tradition, we will ski in one long, continuous line from the summit to the Sun Bowl. Once we arrive, we’ll gather in the Sun Bowl base lodge to reflect, share stories, and honor the many ways Matt touched our lives.

Matt Erickson Scholarship Fund
To ensure Matt’s legacy of mentorship and instructor development continues, we are working to establish a scholarship fund with the Professional Ski Instructors of America / American Association of Snowboard Instructors (PSIA-AASI), the organization that provides training and certification for all Mountain Sports School instructors. Matt loved to joke that he was a “Level 4,” having proudly earned his Level 2 in Alpine Skiing and Level 2 in Telemark Skiing. He celebrated his own achievements with joy, and showed that same joy every time one of his coaches earned a certification of their own.
The scholarship will help reduce the financial barrier for instructors pursuing PSIA-AASI certifications. Because Matt cared deeply about children’s instruction, funds will be dedicated to helping instructors who work primarily with Children’s programs.
To establish a scholarship in Matt’s name, we need to raise $25,000. Our hope is that the March 14th event will also serve as a fundraiser to help us reach that goal. If you are unable to join us but would like to contribute, you can donate using the link below:
