U8 Alpine Race Program

8:30am to 3pm (Lunch 11:30am to 12:30pm)

(AGES 6-7)

This program is designed to introduce young skiers to the Stratton Mountain racing program, all mountain skiing, and skiing fundamentals.  The U8 program is a fun approach to free skiing, drills, and skills.  Participants must be self-sufficient and should be able to ride the lift alone, put on their own equipment, and ski parallel down intermediate terrain. The emphasis of the U8 age group is learning fundamental skiing skills, lots of skiing, and fun.  This group will participate in Stratton’s fun home race series during the season, but travel to other venues is not required.  Participants should have 1-pair for current model skis and properly fitted boots.

U10 Alpine Race Program

(AGES 8-9)

The emphasis in the U10 program is on building strong free skiing technique with an introduction to ski racing. Basic balance and skiing fundamentals will be promoted as well as an introduction to race training. The goal is to create skiers with sound skiing skills, which will then help them become stronger racers. There various five Southern Vermont Council races scheduled to give the participants the opportunity to experience competition. Participants must be able to ride the lift alone, put on their own equipment and ski more advanced terrain. We encourage race participation, which requires memberships in the Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA) and the United States Ski Association (USSA). Participants should have 1-pair for current model GS-style skis and properly fitted boots.

U12 Alpine Race Program

(AGES 10-11)

The U12 program is designed to continue development of the athletes’ basic skiing fundamentals through free skiing, drill work, drill courses, gate training, and an introduction to video analysis. Strong skiing skills are a prerequisite with an emphasis on the ability to carve. At this level, there is an increase in the teaching of race tactics and competition but basic skiing fundamentals and free skiing will continue to be the primary focus. The U12 age class will also be introduced to speed elements training.. There are various Southern Vermont Council races scheduled for this age group that the athletes are expected to attend. Typical equipment needs for this group include: Helmet (no ‘soft ears’), slalom protection gear, a GS suit, and properly sized current slalom and giant slalom skis. Athletes must be members of the Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA) and the United States Ski Association (USSA).

U14 Alpine Race Program

8:30am to 3pm (Lunch 11:30am to 12:30pm)

(AGES 12-13)

The U14 program will focus on skiing skill development through technical free skiing, drill courses, video analysis, and gate training. Athletes must be strong skiers with the ability to ski the entire mountain. Participants will continue to focus on free ski fundamentals with an increase in gate training, competition, and video analysis. The U14 age class will also be introduced to Super-G/speed elements training, and racing. There are multiple Southern Vermont Council races for this group with the top performers advancing to a Vermont State Championship. From State Championships, the top performers will move on to the Eastern Championships. Typical equipment needs for this age group include: FIS approved GS/SG Helmet (no ‘soft ears’ for GS/SG), a GS suit, slalom protection gear, and properly sized slalom, giant slalom, and Super-G skis. At this age, it is strongly recommend that athletes wear back protection when training GS and Super-G. Athletes must be members of the Vermont Alpine Racing Association, (VARA) as well as the United States Ski Association (USSA).

U16 Alpine Race Program

(AGES 14-15)

The U16 athletes typically have had a number of years of racing experience and are expert skiers. The U16 program continues to work on technical free skiing with an increased focus on gate training, racing, and video analysis. The U16 athletes will participate in the Vermont Cup race series and the Vermont U16 State Championship. The top performers at the U16 State Championships will move on to an Eastern Championships. The athletes will also focus on the development of their USSA ‘point profile’. Typical equipment needs include: FIS approved GS Helmet (no ‘soft ears’), GS suit, slalom protection gear, a back protector, and properly sized SL, GS and SG skis. Athletes must be members of the Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA) as well as the United States Ski Association (USSA).

The U19 program is for high school aged athletes who want to continue their ski racing in a weekend program. These athletes participate in the USSA Vermont Cup Series. The stronger athletes may qualify for the Eastern FIS race series. The additional training on varied terrain will give an advantage to this aged athlete as they continue to develop their technical and tactical skills. The U19 group will develop their skiing through technical free skiing, drill courses, increased gate training, and video analysis. Typical equipment needs include: FIS approved GS Helmet (no ‘soft ears’), a GS suit, slalom protection gear, a back protector, and properly sized SL, GS and SG skis. Athletes must be members of the Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA) as well as the United States Ski Association (USSA). Athletes hoping to compete at a FIS level will need to purchase a FIS license prior to the season.

MASTERS ALPINE RACING
8:30 am to 2:30 pm (Lunch: 11:30 am to 12:30 pm)

AGE 19 AND UP.  The Masters Racing program is for the Master racer who wants to continue their ski training and racing in a weekend adult program. Some of the participants compete in the New England Masters race series, while others just love to ski fast and train lots of gates. The training on varied terrain with dedicated program coaches will give an advantage to the master aged athlete who wants to continue to develop their technical and tactical skills. Typical equipment needs include: FIS approved GS Helmet (no ‘soft ears’), a GS suit, slalom protection gear, a back protector, and properly sized SL and GS skis. Participants are encouraged to become members of the Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA) as well as the United States Ski Association (USSA).

The Master-Racing program also offers a Friday-Sunday (Masters + Friday) program for those Masters racers looking for more skiing and training.  The Friday program runs from 9:00am-2:30pm on all non-holidays.

MASTERS 101 - M1 
8:30 am to 11:30 (MORNING SESSION ONLY)

AGE 19 AND UP.  The Masters-M1 program is for the newer Master skier or racer who wants to improve their skiing skills, train in entry-level courses, and enjoy skiing Stratton with a like-minded group of adults.  Participants will work on their skiing and training skills in a relaxed atmosphere and may join in with the Masters-Racing program once they are ready.  Dedicated coaches will teach and guide the group through GS and SL skills, as well as free skiing fundamentals.  This is a program for those looking to learn and have a fun time in the process.  This is a morning program that runs from 8:30am-11:30am.

ALLEGRO – Recreational Freestyle & Freeskiing

Advanced Skiers Only (Age 8-18)

Allegro is a high level recreational ski program that thrives on a fun; is a fast paced environment where young skiers will gain confidence and grow skills necessary to ski anywhere on the mountain, in any conditions. Groups will spend time learning how to manage smaller sized natural and man-made features, that include jumps, moguls, boxes or rails. This program provides a great introduction into what it's like being a Freestyle and/or Freeskiing competitor without the added commitment. Participants will establish goals that would include performing basic tricks on jumps and boxes, skiing a mogul line top to bottom with airs and skiing switch comfortably on green terrain. Though not a requirement, participants are encouraged to compete in one competition a year at Stratton. A rolling skills assessment will provide performance measurements and will be used to map continued participation within the program. USSA Short Term License is required for participation in any USSA event. Event registration fees are not included.

FREESTYLE DEVELOPMENT TEAM

B-Team: Competitive Program (Age 10-16)

8:30am to 3pm (Lunch Break 11:30am to 12:30pm)

This program builds on the skills learned in the Allegro program and begins to specialize training orientated toward mogul competition. Participating athletes will be expected to come prepared to daily sessions ready to train, as they develop air awareness on more difficult jumps and ski moguls with more power and speed. Athletes will ski with USSA certified coaches, many whom have individually participated at high levels of mogul competition. Coaching staff will have a presence at scheduled Central Region competitions and Divisional Championships in the Eastern Qualifier Series (EQS) sanctioned events put on by Eastern Division of the United States Ski & Snowboard Association (USSA). On –hill performance and associated goals will be evaluated throughout the winter season. USSA Competitor License is required for participation in any USSA event. Event registration fees are not included. Additional travel fees may be required.

FREESTYLE TEAM

A-Team: Competitive Program (Age 14+)

8:30am to 3pm (Lunch Break 11:30am to 12:30pm)

This program is open to athletes who have qualified for the Eastern Championship Series (ECS) from the Freestyle Development Team (B-Team) and will travel regionally to ECS events in the USSA Eastern Division. This is a highly structured program with an elite level coaching staff. Each participating athlete is provided a personalized performance plan that includes extended on and off snow training opportunities, Friday through Sunday during the season, with additional and select training and competition days both early and late season. Additional training plan components will address nutrition and fitness while away from Stratton midweek and/or off season. Goal setting and performance assessment will be ongoing throughout the year, and athletes will be active and accountable in this process. USSA Competitor License is mandatory. Additional FIS License may apply. Event registration fees are not included. Additional travel costs may be required.

Athletes will aspire to qualify for the USASA National Championships and the USSA Regional and Eastern championships. Additional travel expenses, membership dues and event fees will be required.

Training will include terrain-park, half-pipe, boarder-cross and race activity, in accordance with our athletes’ event schedule. Competition will include regional events within the USASA Southern Vermont Series along with any additional events deemed appropriate by the coaching staff and management team.  Additional travel expenses, membership dues and event fees will be required.
