On the heels of an amazing winter that brought 209 inches of snow, Stratton Mountain Resort is preparing for another epic season.

With a fiftieth birthday celebration, new snow guns, freshly cut trails and an events calendar boasting the US Open Snowboarding and the US Freestyle Championships, Stratton is poised to eclipse last season's revelry.

1. What's New for the 2011-2012 Season

This season, Stratton revamps the mountain experience from planning to playing. The resort, crowning the highest peak in southern Vermont, is adding two new trails, a terrain park on Big Ben, 300 energy efficient snow guns, two snowcats and solar compactors.

 

 

2. Myth buster: rentals are not just for the new and ill-equipped one-time winter warrior

With over 30 models and a state of the art reservation system, the Stratton Ski and Snowboard rental experience is one rooted in convenience and options. From progressive riders to first timers, on one plank or two, Stratton Rentals at the base is the leanest way to get outfitted with the latest gear.

 

 

3. Stratton is teaching old dogs new tricks

The ski and snowboard school saw a 10% increase in adult lessons in the 2010-2011 season. In increasing numbers, boomers are learning to love winter and love learning. Whether guiding students through wedge turns or the steep moguls on World Cup, Stratton Mountain has long been home to a new school of ski school.

 

 

4. Off-Hill Activities

A no-car-needed resort, Stratton offers the ultimate in park and play fun in an Austrian village lined with shops, restaurants and a spa just steps from the Gondola and lodging properties. Skiing and riding over 600 acres of terrain and 100 acres of glades on the highest peak in southern Vermont. 6. The History of Snowboarding

Stratton has long been regarded as the birthplace of snowboarding. This season, the resort celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the US Open Snowboarding and the launch of Burton's pilot Experience Snowboarding program.

 

 

7. Environmental Legacy

Stratton has long been at the forefront of large scale environmental efforts. This season, the resort is adding 300 energy efficient snow guns and four Big Belly Solar Compactors. "Our playgrounds are natural, living, vulnerable terrain," says Environmental Manager Jenna Pugliese. "The NSAA's support and encouragement of so many sustainability initiatives keenly highlights the fact that the onus is on the resorts to take the necessary measures to protect our mountains."

 

 

8. 50th Anniversary

This year Stratton honors its 50th birthday with a season-long celebration of heritage, tradition and progression reflected through five decades of innovation. From day one, Stratton was a lively resort community in a world of day ski areas. Golf and tennis soon made Stratton a year-round destination. A 27-hole championship golf course and signature Cliff Drysdale Tennis facility are the hallmarks of summer at Stratton.
