The Best Fall Foliage Destination

Stratton Mountain, VT-  For fall foliage at its peak, there may be no better vantage point than the summit of Stratton Mountain, which is easily accessible by gondola or by hiking to the top.

As the cooler nights of fall turn those Green Mountains to a blaze of yellow, red, orange,  the highest peak in southern Vermont looks out on the colors of autumn’s  Oak, Maple, Beech, and Ash trees, and clear across four states.

Stratton’s midweek Room and a View package, starting at $39.50 per person, includes a gondola ride along with lodging at the Inn at Stratton Mountain.

The gondola is open Saturday and Sunday through the summer and every day when the leaves are at their peak; starting September 26 through October 13 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Tickets are available in the Stratton Welcome Center and visitors are encouraged to bring lunch to the summit for a picnic at 3,875 feet!

A short hike to the Stratton Fire Tower delivers great views, or follow the trail to Stratton Pond for a cool down swim.  Popular hiking routes and trail maps are viewable at www.stratton.com/todo/summer-activities/hiking/index.htm

In fact, Stratton Mountain is also a hiker’s paradise.  In 1909, James P. Taylor stood on the mountain’s summit and dreamed of a trail that would span the entire length of Vermont from Massachusetts to Canada.  This idea would later become Vermont’s famous 272 mile Long Trail, which runs across Stratton’s summit.  Soon after, the idea for the Appalachian Trail was conceived on the summit of Stratton during construction of the Long Trail.  Both of these trails, along with dozens of other routes run from the Stratton summit to points north, south, east and west.

After a day on the mountain, Stratton Village beckons with restaurants, special events and a wide range of lodging from hotel rooms to spacious mountain homes, attractive rates are available by the night or for the month.
