Stratton Wins NSAA 2011 Sustainable Slopes Grant

Resort to purchase four solar compactors

STRATTON MOUNTAIN, VERMONT, May 05, 2011 – The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) has awarded Stratton Mountain Resort one of six 2011 Sustainable Slopes Grants to pursue an innovative sustainability program. Stratton will use the grant to purchase four solar compactors which are expected to reduce the number of trips required to perform waste removal by 80 percent. Successful execution of this program will directly impact, and reduce, the resort’s GHG emissions.

“Our playgrounds are natural, living, vulnerable terrain,” says Environmental Manager Jenna Pugliese. “The NSAA’s support and encouragement of so many sustainability initiatives keenly highlights the fact that the onus is on the resorts to take the necessary measures to protect our mountains.”

This year, the NSAA distributed over $55,000 in grants across six resorts. The funds were made possible with the support of CLIF Bar & Co., the Natural Resources Defense Council and Snow Economics/HKD Snowmakers.
